Ximena, a woman in her fifties, lives isolated to hide her illiteracy. Jackeline, a young and idealistic teacher of unemployed language, is hired by Ximena to read the newspaper every day. Despite the resistance of her employer, Jackeline's personal mission is to teach her to read so that Ximena can discover the message her father left her in a letter before abandoning it.

The Illiterate is a naturalist work that presents daily situations to gradually reveal deep messages about the human condition and the social situation of Latin American countries such as Mexico and Chile.

One of the problems exposed in The Illiterate is the failed educational system in which people coexist as the protagonists of history: there are those who, like Ximena, go to school but nobody cares to teach them something and their particular processes to learn; and there are those, like Jackeline, who have the knowledge and enthusiasm to share them but can not find work spaces to develop their vocation. The young teacher personifies the great challenge or "miracle" that means to turn ignorance into knowledge.
Another idea - perhaps more metaphorical - raised by the work is that people have to learn to reread, beyond the letters, their past and their reality to transform their future.

Also, The Illiterate addresses conceptions and feelings rooted in everyday life as remorse, craving, taboos, enjoyment, frustrations and prejudices. Thus, we see that beyond the illiteracy that is always spoken, there is also an emotional and sentimental one.
Finally, the work explores in nature, the power and richness of the written and spoken word, enhancing the symbiotic relationship teacher-student. The interaction of the two women in an intimate space shows that reciprocity is key in teaching and that it is not only the teacher who has the formal knowledge.

The Illiterate is a winning work in 2011 of the Altazor Prize of the National Arts of Chile in the mode of Dramaturgy, written by the renowned Chilean author Pablo Paredes.

The original staging was carried out by the experienced actress and theater director Paulina García, who gained international relevance after receiving several awards -including the Silver Bear of the Berlin Festival for her masterful performance in the Chilean film Gloria (directed by Sebastián Lelio). ).
After its successful assembly in several Latin American countries, the story of The Illiterate was taken to the big screen, Paredes and Garcia repeating their participation in the film, which was selected at important festivals such as Venice, Mar del Plata, Havana, Chicago and Sao Paulo, Gramado and Huelva, among others.

Casiopea Producciones brings to Mexico this scenic proposal that, after its apparent simplicity, displays deep themes; to be directed by Paulina García herself and co-starring Gabriela de la Garza and Dolores Heredia.
